Privacy Policy

Last updated September 4, 2026.

Who we are

EVGrid (“EVGrid,” “we,” “us”) is an independently operated social map for EV drivers. EVGrid is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Tesla, Inc. This policy explains what information EVGrid collects when you use the app, why, and what control you have over it.

Information we collect

Account information

When you sign in with Apple, Google, or email, we receive the name, email address, and profile photo (if any) that provider makes available. Apple may provide a private relay email. You also choose a display name and handle inside EVGrid.

Tesla vehicle data

A Tesla connection is optional. If you connect one, EVGrid uses Tesla’s own official sign-in page and never sees or stores your Tesla password. That connection is handled entirely on our server, not in your browser, and returns only what’s needed to verify you own a real Tesla vehicle and to operate the features you use: your vehicle’s VIN, model, color, trim, and, when you actively use a feature that needs it, live charge level. Your Tesla access token is stored encrypted on our server and is never sent to your device, a browser, or any client-side code.

Location

EVGrid is a map, so it needs your device’s location to show you on it and to route you places. How precisely other drivers can see your location is controlled entirely by the privacy mode you choose in Settings:

  • Ghost — you appear to no one; your location is not published.
  • Nearby — approximate position visible to nearby drivers.
  • Friends — precise position visible only to accepted friends.
  • Convoy — precise position visible only to members of a convoy you’re actively in, for its duration.

These rules are enforced on the server, not just hidden in the app’s interface — a stranger’s app cannot request data your privacy mode doesn’t permit them to see, regardless of what the interface shows.

Anonymous map preview

The public homepage map does not request or use your device location. If you manually search for places, click a starting point, or request a route, those search terms and coordinates are sent through an EVGrid server function to our mapping provider only to return the result. EVGrid does not store a history of those searches or routes. We keep a short-lived, one-way hash derived from the network address making the request solely to enforce anonymous request limits; the raw address is not stored in that counter.

Every driver, Wave, and Convoy shown in the anonymous preview is fictional and runs only in your browser. The preview cannot read real EVGrid profiles or live driver locations.

Nearby Radio (Beta)

Nearby Radio is an optional, invite-only push-to-talk voice feature currently in beta. It is off by default. If you turn it on and join a channel, your device’s microphone is active for that session; your outgoing audio track is enabled only while you hold the talk control. Audio travels directly between participants’ devices (peer-to-peer) rather than through our servers. Supported browser sessions may keep a rolling local buffer of up to 30 seconds of incoming audio for an optional safety report. It is not uploaded unless you submit that report and is otherwise discarded automatically.

Device and usage information

We collect ordinary technical data needed to operate the app: browser/device type, crash and error reports, and basic interaction data (e.g., which features you use) so we can find and fix problems.

Cookies and local storage

EVGrid uses your browser’s local storage and session storage to keep you signed in and remember your preferences (map style, privacy mode, etc.). We don’t use third-party advertising trackers.

How we use your information

  • Operate the map, navigation, Convoys, and other features you use.
  • Verify and connect a Tesla vehicle when you choose to use optional vehicle features.
  • Send a destination to your car’s screen or read its charge level, only when you ask us to.
  • Keep the app secure and prevent abuse.
  • Respond to support requests and safety reports.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your location or Tesla data for advertising.

Who we share data with

EVGrid runs on a small set of infrastructure providers that process data on our behalf:

  • Google Firebase / Google Cloud — authentication, database, file storage, and server functions.
  • Tesla, Inc. (Fleet API) — only for the vehicle actions you directly request (verification, navigation send, charge level).
  • TomTom — place search, traffic, road context, and traffic-aware route calculation.
  • MapLibre / OpenFreeMap — supplies the map tiles you see.

We share your live location with other EVGrid drivers only to the extent your chosen privacy mode allows, as described above. We otherwise do not share your personal information with third parties for their own purposes.

Data retention and deletion

Location data is ephemeral — it exists to render the live map and is not kept as a historical trail. Nearby Radio audio is not retained unless you submit it with a report. You can disconnect your Tesla account at any time from Settings, which removes your stored Tesla access token. You can permanently delete your EVGrid account and associated data—including authored content, messages, likes, uploaded media, saved locations, vehicle data, and authentication record—directly in Settings after confirming the action. You can also contact us for help with deletion or a data request.

Your choices

  • Change your privacy mode, or switch to Ghost, at any time in Settings.
  • Disconnect your Tesla account at any time.
  • Turn Nearby Radio on or off at any time; it is off by default.
  • Permanently delete your account in Settings, or contact us for deletion help or a copy of your data.

Children's privacy

EVGrid is for adults age 18 and older. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly allow anyone under 18 to create or use an account. If you believe someone under 18 has created an account, contact us and we will investigate and remove the account and associated personal information as appropriate.

Security

Access to your data is enforced by server-side security rules on every database EVGrid uses, not just by what the app’s interface shows — a modified or malicious client still cannot read data those rules don’t permit. Connections to EVGrid are encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS), and Tesla tokens are never exposed to your browser.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we’ll update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
